MAY 25, 2018

Live recorded in Mexico City, DIáSPORA, eponymus album, is the sound of bodies in motion across space and time. Produced in South, Central and North America, in collaboration with Principa (MX) & Hérnia de Discos (BR), this is a call to gather tribes over the American continent and beyond. To reconcile ancestral and futuristic stories in the liveliness of contemporary languages.
RELEASE SHOWS:
May 25 Innovation, Montreal
May 26 Obey Convention, Halifax
May 29 Roulette, NYC

DIáSPORA is a nomadic band; sonic witchcraft by Chiquita Magic (voice, synths) & Anaïs Maviel (voice, percussion); a futuristic carnival music that transcends status-quo, cross-pollinates complex realities, inspires lucid dreams.

ormed to the occasion of a South & Central America tour,
DIáSPORA is shaped by motions of people, and expressions of their encounters - also called Creoleness.  A research into diasporic folklores, urban cultures and music as ritual. The multi-lingual songs combine an independent approach of composition with the contagious freedom of their performance.

Isis Giraldo aka Chiquita Magic
is a composer & vocalist.  Her Colombian / Canadian identity is reflected in making music that draws from the jazz tradition, choral music, hip-hop, & cumbia, while combining rich electronic textures using synthesizers and horn like melodies with her voice.  Her interest lies in using cross cultural harmonies & traditions to create something new sounding & explorative. She has played extensively  both in North & South America (Medellin Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz  Festival to name a few) both as a sidewoman, bandleader, and soloist with various ensembles.  She has received various commissions for her work, most recently from Les Voix Ferrées & L'Orchestre National du Jazz.

CHIQUITA MAGIC
“Her choral singing and compositions transcend genre... she is one of the best.“ Ives Bernard,
Le Devoir

“Intelligent & emotional in her interpretation.  Hats off! “ Frederic Bussieres Poste D’Ecoute

ANAÏS MAVIEL
"What a power and expression! Experimental & abstract of the one hand, but at the same time rooted in old black musical traditions." DM - Vital Weekly
"Her process is so deeply rooted as to be almost subliminal. She seems to throw herself at her notes, as if seeking a sound that might convey pure energetics." Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times
