I hear music everywhere. Every body sings. Every heart beats. We are all instant composers of our life rhythm and melody. I teach music as the art of listening to one's unique voice, and the art of communication ; to hear and be heard. With practical tools such as a wide repertoire from Afrocentric traditions and embodied vocal technique, improvising becomes a tool to self exploration, healing and liberation.
Background:
I studied vocal improvisation at Paris 13th Conservatory with Claudia Solal, as well as Beñat Achiary & Jen Shyu, vocal technique with Hélène Sage and Judith Berkson, and vocal caranatic (South Indian) with Kamini Dandapani. I learnt sound healing and circle singing with music therapist Dominique Sylvain (Joyshanti) and ensemble singing with Meredith Monk Ensemble. I approach teaching as an exchange: as an eternal student, teaching and learning are part of the same cycle. I have taught singing classes from beginners to professionals in Paris & New York, and Circle Singing workshops in the US, Haiti, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Chile from favelas to universities and became an unique facilitator for community-based circle singing, body percussion & vocal technique supporting musical freedom and collective empowerment.
I currently offer:
- "Story Songs of the African Diaspora" - in partnership with Urban Stages, at New York City public libraries, free for all ages
- Individual classes with focus on creative development; singing technique; improvisation. From beginners to accomplished singers, all ages.
- Individual & collective sound healing sessions
- Circle Singing Workshops
