FourOneOne presents Transatlantik: Patrick Chamoiseau, Sélène Saint-Aime, Aruán Ortiz, and Anaïs Maviel in Conversation

Born in 1953 in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Patrick Chamoiseau is a leading figure in Martinician literature and in postcolonial literature globally. His widely-translated works include plays, novels, fictionalized memoirs, and other aesthetic explorations of creolization, postcolonial poetics, and Martinician identity. In the 1980s, Patrick was a founder of the créolité literary and intellectual movement. His influential 1992 novel Texaco won France’s highest literary honor, the Prix Goncourt, and has been  described in The Guardian as a “masterpiece, the work of a genius, a novel that deserves to be known as much as Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth and Césaire's Return to My Native Land."

Patrick will be in conversation with three artists, Aruán Ortiz, Anaïs Maviel, and Sélène Saint Aimé, whose recent works and broader artistic practices take up creolized musical forms and the legacies of negritude and créolité.

This conversation is free and open to the public. RSVP link coming soon.

THUR, NOV 14, 8:30PM @
Constellation, 3111 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL, 60618

Reimagining Tropiques: Then and Now featuring Aruán Ortiz, Anaïs Maviel and Aliya Ultan.

Reimagining Tropiques: Then and Now, is an new trio project with singer and percussionist Anaïs Maviel that examines articles, comments, and essays on negritude, creolization, and transatlantic Surrealism published by the iconic Martinican magazine Tropiques from 1941 to 1945, and explores the cultural syncretism between French modernism and the Afro-Caribbean experience. My score includes a series of pieces/sketches that integrate traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms and chants, contemporary classical music, and avant-garde jazz improvisation, as well as poetry and spoken word with the idea of reinterpreting the ideas to illustrate the work narrative of the journal.

MORE ABOUT FREE SPIRIT FEST: The Brooklyn Free Spirit Festival invites artists and audiences to engage with the ways improvisation and play inform, inspire, and enrich our daily lives. This year’s festival calls together a diverse group of musical artists whose work often exists between the boundaries of genre, and incorporates or has been informed by improvisation/play in myriad ways. Over the span of two days, audiences are invited to convene at Ibeam Brooklyn, and take part in a workshop on improvisation led by Kyoko Kitamura, which will guide participants through Anthony Braxton’s Language Music and beyond, as well as attend a 90-minute immersive listening experience and in-person interview with the pioneering bassoonist/composer Karen Borca on her body of Free Jazz works and life in music, moderated by Ben Young, and curated by Melanie Dyer. Evening concerts will feature producer/songwriter/vocalist/member of Heroes Are Gang Leaders, Jenna Camille, the high energy free improvising ensemble XXE making a rare duo appearance (Gabby Fluke-Mogul - violin /  Mara Rosenbloom - piano), composer/vocalist/instrumentalist Anaïs Maviel performing solo, and a rare NYC performance by Kalun Leung’s Montreal-based trio Ambient Parade, performing on their custom made instruments. The Free Spirit Festival welcomes artists and audiences to share space between and following the events to meet and talk. Light food and beverage provided.

Melanie Maar's Line Death Dance is an ongoing performance residency project.
being in concrete light gives this trio of women a frame for their individual ways of perceiving and relating to generate a performance work, an object of attention together. This process is initiating the yet un-renovated new home of The Chocolate Factory Theater by communing with the space and its transitional presence.
The events we host for audience offer a performative and a reflective space for all engaged. Rather than a glimpse into our process for a final event, this is the final event at the beginning of a 2 year process. With all knowns and un-knowns becoming the show.
these events are free. RSVP to attend at [email protected]

SUN MARCH 3, 8PM @Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn
Gelsey Bell, Yoon Sun Choi, Anaïs Maviel, Megan Schubert - vocal quartet premieres:
Drawing from a wide array of inspirations, techniques, and genres, three acclaimed vocalist-composers come together to write new pieces for each other. Each premiere reflects the individual style of the composer while capitalizing on the collaborators’ flexible voices and improvisational intelligence. Maviel's "Be" investigates the co-existence of duality and unity in this world in transformation. You might hear all layered urban, natural, feminine, masculine references, negation that negates itself in a play with even and odd numbers - all invoking balancing with the repeated question: ¿Que estas haciendo? [What are you doing?] Portuguese, Spanish, French, Japanese and English are used in this version, as well as a line from a Robert Kocik poem.

One of PLATFORM 2020: Utterances from the Chorus‘s central questions “How do we weave a collective song?” builds on the ideas behind Okpokwasili’s and Born’s durational piece, Sitting On a Man’s Head.Okwui’s 2016 research into Nigerian women’s embodied protest resulted in the durational performance created by Okwui and Peter. The practice known as “sitting on a man” was a disruptive durational practice and a public act of shaming carried out by a collective of women in Southeastern Nigeria. It involved gathering in the private courtyard of a colonial official, dancing and singing songs that expressed their grievances and was designed to embarrass the official until he promised to address their concerns. This practice was used by women as a critical tool to protect their economic and social interests.

Rather than “shaming” or seeking redress, Okpokwasili’s and Born’s Sitting On a Man’s Head is an attempt to create a “space of restoration and restitution,” write Okpokwasili and Born. “We are engaged in a creative practice concerned with the formation of new bonds of kinship. In collaboration with a select group of artists, we use the tools of our performance practice to build a space for the creation of an improvisational public song composed of aural and choreographic gestures. Can a shared creative practice be generative and generous while also being instructive in imagining new possibilities of communal relations?”
The work features a rotating chorus of performers, who will activate the performance: Martita Abril, Peter Born, Jennifer Brogle, mayfield brooks, Leslie Cuyjet, André Daughtry, Eisa Davis, Brittany Engel-Adams, Lily Gold, Naja Gordon, Melanie Greene, Audrey Hailes, Remi Harris, Jasmine Hearn, Justin Hicks, Shayla-Vie Jenkins, Chaesong Kim, Tendayi Kuumba, Breyanna Maples, Priscilla Marrero, Anais Maviel, Okwui Okpokwasili, Maya Orchin, Kay Ottinger, Jess Pretty, Greg Purnell, Hans Rasch, Katrina Reid, Jean Carla Rodea, Lily Bo Shapiro, Samita Sinha, Eleanor Smith, Tatyana Tenenbaum, David Thomson, Pyeng Threadgill, Asiya Wadud, Charmaine Warren, AJ Wilmore, Anna Witenberg, and Nehemoyia Young.
